The mRNA vaccine "bubble" is deflating: Why the billion-dollar BioNTech is collapsing

The story of the German pharmaceutical company that, within a few months, transformed from an unknown research startup into the ultimate global regulator of public health, is perhaps the most characteristic example of business boom and bust in the post-pandemic era.

BioNTech , the company that, in collaboration with Pfizer, broke every record by releasing the Comirnaty vaccine, is currently trapped in the vortex of a deep, structural crisis.

The golden age of tens of billions of euros in revenue, which came as a temporary, if gigantic, windfall, is irretrievably gone. The Mainz-based company is now reporting net quarterly losses of 532 million euros , paying the heavy price of over-inflating its production capacity, which was built on the basis of the urgent—but unsustainable in the long term—needs of 2020. The price of this forced adjustment to the new normal is extremely harsh, as the restructuring plan foresees the closure of key production sites in Germany and Singapore, leading to the loss of around 1,860 jobs .

What is most worrying, however, for investors and the markets is not simply the shrinking size, but the imminent departure of its visionary founders, Ugur Sahin and Ozlem Turecci .

The iconic duo, who were the driving scientific and entrepreneurial force behind the BioNTech phenomenon, have already announced that they will step down by the end of 2026 to found a new biotechnology company.

This news immediately caused the stock to fall by 18% , raising serious questions among financial analysts, such as investment bank Leerink Partners , about whether the organization has the reflexes and ability to maintain its innovative advantage without its natural leaders.

The fact that production related to coronavirus vaccines is now being transferred entirely to Pfizer demonstrates the absolute need to free itself from idle units that are “burning” liquidity at a time when the European and American markets are recording a dramatic decrease in demand.

BioNTech’s attempt to control losses and shield itself legally intensified introversion and provoked strong social reactions, especially after the controversial acquisition of competitor CureVac for $1.25 billion .

CureVac, having failed to launch an effective vaccine, had been engaged in a relentless legal war against BioNTech and Pfizer for mRNA patent infringement. The aggressive acquisition served as a shield to end the litigation , but the immediate closure of CureVac’s historic former factory in Tübingen left behind rubble.

The decision sparked outrage from Mayor Boris Palmer and the IG BCE union, who accused the company of sacrificing technological know-how and skilled scientists for short-term financial interests , undermining the resilience of Germany’s entire biotech hub. High energy and labor costs, combined with cumbersome bureaucracy, exacerbate the structural problem.

Today, the company is at a critical crossroads, attempting to transform the pandemic’s funds into solutions for the future. By focusing its full attention on advanced cancer treatments , it is trying to revive its original reason for existence.

The stakes in developing new treatments for breast, lung and other oncological diseases are high. As outgoing CEO Ugur Sahin emphasized, the goal remains to transform science into “survival for patients living with cancer.”

Whether BioNTech will succeed in repeating its scientific miracle or whether it will become the most classic example of a company that relied exclusively on a disposable product will determine not only its own future, but also the broader landscape of modern biotechnology.
