The foustanella and the tsarouchi will make their mark on the other side of the world this year. In the presence of a parade of the Greek Presidential Guard, the events for the National Anniversary of October 28 will be held in Sydney and Canberra .
The visit will last from October 22 to 29 and includes a series of official ceremonies, religious events, commemorative events and cultural activities.
In Sydney, the visit is organized by the Hellenic Club of Sydney , with the support of the New South Wales Government , as part of a full week of events dedicated to Hellenism.
A special place in the program is occupied by the festive celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Greek Club of Sydney, which will take place on Saturday, October 24 at the Hyatt Regency . This is an anniversary of particular importance, as it concerns an institution that has accompanied the Greek presence in Australia for an entire century.
In Canberra , the visit is being organised by the Hellenic Club of Canberra and the Parish and Community of St Nicholas . The Evzones will participate in events at the National Parliament , the Australian War Memorial and the Hellenic Club of Canberra on 28 October.
The choice of the Australian War Memorial is not accidental and gives the visit a dimension that goes beyond the celebratory character. Thousands of Australian soldiers fought on Greek soil and in Crete in 1941, and many of them never returned. The presence of an honorary guard of the Presidential Guard in front of this monument captures a bond that was built in wartime conditions and remains alive eight decades later.
