Thirty years have passed since this moment was waiting. And when it came, it came in the most emphatic way. Hellas Melbourne is writing history again, preparing another golden page in its book.

The legendary Greek-Australian team, now known as South Melbourne FC , defeated Queensland Lions 3-1 in the semi-finals of the Australia Cup and triumphantly qualified for the grand final. There, they will face one of the A-League giants, Melbourne Victory .

Against the Lions, Greece was amazing . In front of approximately 4,000 fans who experienced an unforgettable night, the team prevailed with confidence and quality, with its striker, Juach Bul , as its absolute protagonist. The 25-year-old striker scored all three goals , putting in a magical performance and fully justifying the management’s choice to invest in his acquisition a few months ago.

This great night, however, did not come out of nowhere. It is the fruit of a systematic effort that began with the assumption of leadership by Vasilis Papastergiadis , president of the Greek Community of Melbourne, together with Greek Cypriot businessman Andrew Mesourouni . The complete reorganization of the football department and infrastructure bore fruit with impressive speed, and Hellas Melbourne is today once again a pole of attraction , both for the large Greek community and for the multitude of Australian fans who embrace the team.

The history it carries on its shoulders makes the moment even more touching. It was born in 1959 by Greek immigrants , following the merger of South Melbourne United , Yarra Park Aias and Hellenic , and was named South Melbourne Hellas , or “Hellas Melbourne”, as all Greeks in Australia know it.

Along the way, they won four championships in the National Soccer League era and, in 1996 , lifted the NSL Cup . Thirty years after that triumph, the team is once again one win away from the big prize. The appointment with history was given for Saturday, October 10, at 8.30 pm.

Yes, Victory belongs to the top division and has a different class of players. But in football, budgets don’t end up on the pitch. And a team that started with immigrants with empty hands and full hearts, sixty-seven years later, stands tall against the strongest in the country.

On the evening of October 10, thousands of Greeks in Melbourne will hold their breath. And they will do so with the hope that this story, which began in 1959 in a then foreign homeland, still has chapters to write.
