The Coalition opposition in the state of Victoria in Australia announced a significant pre-election commitment to create a “Greek Festival Fund” of $800,000 , promising practical support for the cultural and religious events of the Greek Diaspora in the event of an electoral victory next November.
The announcement was made by the Shadow Minister for Multicultural and Religious Affairs, Evan Mulholland , flanked by the Liberal MP candidate for Ashwood, Theo Zographos , in the context of the major festival at the Holy Monastery of “Axion Esti” in Northcote , in the presence of the Archbishop of Australia, His Holiness Makarios, hierarchs and more than 15,000 Greeks.
The four-year funding, which is planned to be allocated in close coordination with the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia , aims to ensure the sustainability and further development of an extensive network of parish celebrations across the state. Festivals and religious celebrations are a timeless pillar of maintaining Greek identity, faith and intergenerational bonds , bringing the entire community together beyond narrow ecclesiastical boundaries.
The planned support comes as organizers grapple with rising operating costs , as factors such as high insurance premiums, local council taxes and strict security standards dramatically strain event budgets. According to Coalition officials, the special fund will provide the necessary financial resilience and long-term planning , ensuring that Victoria’s Greek Orthodox parishes continue to showcase their tradition and culture with the greatest possible community participation.
