With deep emotion and absolute respect for historical truth, the Hellenism of Melbourne honored this year’s 106th anniversary of the Genocide of the Pontic Greeks . Through a series of shocking events under the title “Memories of the Genocide of Pontic Hellenism” , the dynamic Australian diaspora proved once again that distance from the homeland does not alter the debt of historical memory, transforming the events into a resounding message against forgetting.
The focus of the memorial events was transferred to the Holy Monastery of Panagia Axion Estin in Northcote, where an official doxology and memorial prayer were held, to be followed by the established, emotionally charged, wreath-laying ceremony. Representatives of the Church, members of the Greek diplomatic delegation , Australian political actors, as well as a number of Greek community organizations were present, confirming the institutional unity around the Pontic issue.
Those present paid tribute to the 353,000 souls who were violently exterminated during the period 1914–1923. Special mention was made of the decisive year 1919 , which marked the bloodiest climax of the systematic persecutions, deportations and exhausting death marches imposed by the Ottoman and Kemalist authorities. During the speeches, it was emphasized that this uprooting was not an accidental collateral loss of war, but an organized plan with the clear aim of completely eliminating the long-standing and thriving Greek presence from the shores of the Black Sea.
One of the most crucial points highlighted during the ceremony concerned the fact that this crime against humanity remained largely unpunished , due to the inaction and inadequate response of the international community at the time. Against the backdrop of this historical injustice, May 19 emerged once again as a timeless, global landmark not only for the vindication of the victims, but also as a living reminder for the defense of human rights. As characteristically emphasized by the organizers, the sacrifice of Pontic Hellenism must constitute the ultimate guide for a future that will be founded on the unwavering respect for human life and international peace .
