The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement recommending to Greek citizens to avoid traveling to Saudi Arabia , unless absolutely necessary, due to the situation developing in the wider Middle East region.
As noted, the recommendation takes into account both the latest developments in the region and the restrictions imposed on traffic in Saudi Arabia’s airspace . The latter is of particular practical importance, as restrictions of this type directly translate into flight cancellations, route diversions and the potential stranding of travelers.
For those already in the country, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issues three specific instructions: to maintain communication with the airline with which they are going to travel, to monitor information from official sources and to follow the instructions of local authorities .
For emergencies or for further information, Greek citizens can contact the Embassy of Greece in Riyadh at +966 (0) 50 6090207 and at the email address gremb.ria@mfa.gr .
Issuing a travel advisory for a country like Saudi Arabia, which is not in a state of war, reflects the scope of the impact of wider instability in the region. Airspace restrictions are usually a precautionary measure against risks that are not limited to a country’s borders, and their impact on civil aviation is immediate.
