The Republic of Cyprus remains on constant alert and in a state of heightened precautionary measures , under the shadow of intense geopolitical turmoil and information about a possible expansion of Tehran’s reprisals in the wider region.
Responding to a revealing Financial Times report, which lists Cyprus—as well as Bulgaria—among Iran’s possible targets in the event of an escalation of the conflict by the US under Donald Trump, a competent Cypriot source told the Cyprus News Agency that Nicosia is closely monitoring developments in real time, having already shielded critical infrastructure in recent months.
The publication cites sources with knowledge of internal processes in Tehran, claiming that Iranian forces have considered strikes against Western and American installations in southeastern Europe.
Cyprus is also under the microscope, especially after the drone attack on a British air base last March, as well as the Bulgarian base in Bezmer, which was recently approved for use by American refueling aircraft.
In this fragile setting, the stable Greek military presence plays a decisive role in the island’s deterrent shield , with four F-16 fighter jets and the frigate “Nikiforos Fokas” remaining deployed on the island.
Nicosia, in full coordination with Athens and international partners, maintains high security reflexes , seeking to protect its territorial integrity and stability in a regional context that remains extremely fluid.
