A night of carefree summer fun turned to tragedy in the popular resort of Saranda , Albania, when a 20-year-old Portuguese tourist was killed in a bloody attack at a popular seaside resort. The incident has shocked the local community and drawn intense international attention as the case unfolds like a police thriller with cinematic chases , allegations of paid bodyguards and suspicions of the involvement of a sworn police officer .
It all started inside the complex’s nightclub, when a misunderstanding involving a young woman sparked an intense argument, which quickly escalated into a general conflict.
According to the statements of the victim’s friends, the 20-year-old had no active participation in the initial fight, but tried to get in the middle to calm things down . At that moment, he received repeated fatal stab wounds to the back and chest . After the murderous attack, the young man went outside injured and ended up on the beach, where his body remained helpless for about three hours until it was found, which raises serious questions about the safety and response of the center’s managers.
The main perpetrator was identified as 29-year-old Socrates Vata , who immediately after the stabbing launched an escape operation. The police immediately activated extensive roadblocks along the road network. About five hours later, the special forces “Shqiponja” located the suspicious vehicle in the Levan area of Fier . The arrest of the 29-year-old had the characteristics of a movie scene: the perpetrator was not in the passenger compartment, but was hidden in the trunk , covered behind suitcases and luggage.
The car was carrying two Turkish nationals , a 31-year-old driver and a 38-year-old passenger, who were arrested and taken with Vata to the Vlora Police Department . When questioned by authorities through a translator, the two foreigners denied any involvement in the murder, claiming that they were regular clubgoers and had hired the 29-year-old as a personal bodyguard and security escort . Their claim that they had taken him into the vehicle solely out of friendly familiarity is under scrutiny, as prosecutors investigate whether they were part of an organized escape plan .
The case took on even more serious dimensions with the arrest of 24-year-old Moisid Matushai , who serves as an assistant special crime investigator at the Border Police Directorate in Gjirokaster. Albanian authorities are investigating whether the young police officer exploited his position to provide cover and support for the alleged murderer’s escape from the scene of the crime. At the same time, investigations are expanding to Tirana to locate another person who allegedly left the scene of the fight.
In total, the Saranda Police have proceeded to bring 42 people to justice , seeking answers about the dynamics of the fateful night, the responsibilities of the center’s security personnel and the chain of persons who helped the 29-year-old. The Prosecutor’s Office’s investigation continues with unabated intensity, in an effort to provide full justice for the unjust loss of a young man who traveled for vacation and was found fatally stabbed while simply trying to stop a fight.
