The borders of Belgium and Germany are on fire – Evacuations of settlements and international alarm

Residents of the border regions between Belgium and Germany experienced a nightmarish night, as the largest fire in Belgian history spiraled out of control, now threatening German territory. The fire front that broke out on August 14 in the sensitive High Fens nature reserve in the province of Liège has already destroyed more than 30,000 hectares of dense and inaccessible forest, leaving behind a huge environmental disaster. The flames, fueled by strong winds and prolonged drought, moved rapidly eastward, forcing authorities on both sides of the border to take drastic measures to protect human lives.

Late Sunday night, the historic German town of Monsau , which has a population of around 12,000, went into emergency mode. The city council issued an immediate evacuation order for residents living on two specific streets in the town. The decision was made on an emergency basis after assessing the latest weather data and the dangerous path of the fire front, which was previously only one and a half kilometres from the German border. A reception and accommodation centre was hastily set up in a local school complex to care for and accommodate the uprooted residents, while warning messages rang out incessantly on citizens’ mobile phones.

In addition to the immediate danger of the fire fronts, German authorities are also sounding the alarm about widespread air pollution . Even if firefighters manage to stop the fire right on the border line, thick toxic smoke is already covering the wider Monsau area, making the atmosphere suffocating and dangerous for public health. For this reason, local authorities are in constant communication with experts, constantly assessing the air quality and the development of the phenomenon.

Across the border, in Belgium, the situation remains equally dramatic. Belgian authorities had earlier rushed to evacuate the community of Kichelscheid , an area just a stone’s throw away, just ten minutes’ drive from Monschau. The battle with the flames is being fought under extremely adverse conditions, as the terrain in the forest prevents easy access for ground forces. A gigantic international firefighting operation has been set up to deal with this unprecedented ecological and humanitarian crisis. Firefighters and rescuers from Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg are fighting shoulder to shoulder on the fire fronts, while the European Union has activated the necessary civil protection mechanisms to provide additional assistance.

This new wave of destruction comes on top of the ordeal that western Germany went through just a few days ago. On Thursday night into Friday, around 1,800 residents were forced to flee their homes because of another large fire that burned 3,000 acres and threatened residential areas. Although that front has now been brought under control thanks to the superhuman efforts of firefighters, local communities remain exhausted and fearful in the face of the outbreak of a new, even greater threat from Belgian soil.

This dramatic development highlights once again the vulnerability of European forests to extreme weather events and the urgent need for cross-border cooperation in responding to emergencies. As night turns to day, hundreds of firefighters continue to battle the flames, hoping that weather conditions will change favorably and allow aerial vehicles to contain the fire front before it causes even greater devastation in the two countries.
