The forensic findings are what will provide the answers. All the questions that have been raised by the sudden death of Giorgos Mazonakis , at the age of 54 , will not be judged by statements or speculation, but by the toxicology and autopsy examination that will accurately determine the causes of death and will show whether or not there was a correlation with the procedure to which the singer was about to undergo.

The popular singer suffered a cardiac arrest while in a private clinic in Kolonaki and, despite the immediate mobilization of the EKAB, the transfer to the “Elpis” hospital and the persistent efforts of the doctors, it was not possible to revive him. The incident caused shock and deep sadness.

His death, however, is no longer being treated as just a tragic and sudden event. The circumstances under which it occurred have come under the microscope of medical services and police authorities, as questions have arisen about the clinic itself, the procedure the singer underwent, and whether the facility had the required license for such medical procedures.

According to the information so far, George Mazonakis was on Wednesday afternoon at a private clinic on Karneadou Street , in order to undergo a procedure known as plasmapheresis . The Emergency Medical Service was notified and initially a motorcycle arrived at the scene, with the rescuer immediately starting cardiopulmonary resuscitation. An ambulance followed, while the resuscitation effort continued throughout the transfer to the on-call hospital.

According to the official statement released by the hospital, the singer arrived at 16:45 by EKAB ambulance and upon arrival he had no spontaneous breathing or pulse . Doctors proceeded with cardiopulmonary resuscitation based on protocol, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

The authorities immediately launched an investigation. Police officers from the Athens Criminal Investigation and Prosecution Sub-Directorate , together with officers from the “Greek FBI”, went to the clinic, with the aim of determining whether criminal acts had been committed and to clarify the exact circumstances. According to information, the treatments advertised by the clinic allegedly did not have a regulatory body’s approval.

The doctor who appears to be the owner was brought in and testified, claiming, according to the same information, that his wife , a gynecologist, was involved in the treatments and monitoring of the singer, as he himself had no particular involvement with the specific procedures. It is noted that, based on the information from the medical association, his wife appears to have no specialty. Those involved claim that no illegal action took place and that everything was carried out in accordance with the prescribed rules.

Both doctors were released late Wednesday night, after their statements. As their lawyer, Nikos Agapinos , reported, the preliminary examination continues and the forensic findings are awaited, while the statements of two employees and the autopsy at the scene are pending. He stressed the need to uphold the presumption of innocence , noting that there can be neither pre-emptive acquittal nor conviction.

Mr. Agapinos argued that there is no connection between the medical act and the death, and therefore no criminal liability arises. He also stated that the medical equipment has been legally declared to the Medical Association, clarifying that these are two co-located doctors with separate individual activities. The two doctors, as he said, are shocked by the incident and asked for calm until the investigations are completed.

The issue, however, immediately took on a political dimension. Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis claimed that the facility had a license for a simple pathology clinic and that this specific procedure was not allowed in such a facility, while he stated that he had asked the Athens Medical Association to immediately carry out the required inspection.

The investigation is also paying particular attention to individual elements of the sequence of events. Police are examining where the singer was before arriving at the clinic, while the testimony of the doctor who allegedly placed the “butterfly” on his arm before the procedure is considered crucial, in order to determine when it was used and for what reason.

The president of the ISA, George Patoulis, took a position in a post, noting that sudden death raises reasonable questions that cannot remain unanswered, without the Association substituting for forensic doctors or judges. As he stated, he ordered an emergency inspection by an ISA team at the site, while the clinic’s file, operating license, its object and intended activities, as well as the medical procedures that were performed there, are being checked.

In the same post, Mr. Patoulis also raised a broader issue. In an era when there is a lot of and often unconfirmed information circulating on the internet about “treatments” and medical procedures, he stressed, special attention is required from everyone. Medical practice, he emphasized, requires scientific competence , legal requirements and respect for human life, while for the ISA, patient safety is non-negotiable. He concluded that the real facts and the competent authorities now have the say.
