Unlicensed, with a criminal conviction, a string of lost ballots, and a stated motive of revenge. This is the man who opened the Guilfoyle file and is now turning on Vance.

In Washington, everyone is talking about the messages. Few are talking about the sender. Eric Dieters, the man who triggered Kimberly Guilfoyle’s resignation, is portrayed as the courageous whistleblower who exposed corruption. But his journey tells a very different story. A story of disciplinary action, legal battles, false allegations and outright threats.

The confession that changed everything

Dieters doesn’t hide why he spoke out. He said it himself, on PBS. “My motivation in all of this is revenge.” As he explained, he had been asking for months from J.D. Vance, Susie Wiles, Trump Jr., Pam Bodie and Cass Patel to mediate for the extradition of Abubakar Atiq Durrani, an Ohio surgeon who fled to Pakistan after being accused of defrauding insurance companies with unnecessary spinal surgeries. Dieters represents former patients of his.

The moment of rupture is described by him with brutal honesty. He sent an email to Wiles, Guilfoyle, and Trump Jr. with an ultimatum. If they did not initiate the extradition process, he would go to the media to see what would happen. They did not listen to him. And he did exactly what he had threatened.

After the ambassador’s resignation, he went even further. He told NewsNation that his goal from the start was to use the scandal to draw the government’s attention to his request. In other words, Guilfoyle wasn’t the target. She was the means of pressure.

A lawyer who was outlawed by the courts

Dieters was a criminologist in northern Kentucky. But his career was marked by successive suspensions. In 2012, the Kentucky Supreme Court suspended him for 61 days. In May 2013, he was given a second 60-day suspension, for making false statements in court in a civil case and in a defamation lawsuit he had filed against the Kenton County District Attorney.

He has been suspended for disciplinary reasons since 2020. In June 2021, the Supreme Court rejected his request to reinstate his license, with its president describing his practice as anarchy and the decision noting his astonishing lack of self-awareness. The same decision recorded that in December 2020 he had unleashed vulgar insults against members of the Bar Association.

Today, he describes himself as a retired lawyer who grew tired of the system. In an interview with the Journal, he preferred a more revealing term. He called himself a legal outlaw.

Convicted of stalking his nephew

In October 2022, while he was already a candidate for governor, his teenage nephew made an obscene gesture to him. Dieters responded by chasing him through his brother’s farm in his tractor, coming within inches of the minor’s vehicle, according to witnesses. He admitted to police that his goal was to intimidate him. This was followed by voicemails and texts to his daughter-in-law, full of homophobic slurs and threats of beating.

In March 2023 , he pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor counts, one for threatening and two for harassing communication. He was sentenced to 270 days in jail, suspended on the condition that he not approach his family for two years. His brother had already secured a restraining order against him. The Kenton County District Attorney’s Office called his behavior inappropriate and criminally punishable.

When the truth becomes optional

Dieters’ relationship with lies didn’t just concern the disciplinary bodies . In January 2023, he publicly claimed that Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin had died after being hit on the Cincinnati field. Hamlin was not only alive, but he was back on the field!

In the gubernatorial race, he alleged that his opponent, Kelly Craft, was not a legal resident of Kentucky. A Fayette County judge dismissed the claim as legally unfounded. In 2020, according to the Enquirer, he was barred from entering the Hamilton County Courthouse after a judge reported that he threatened to burn it down.

When PBS’s Amna Nawaz asked him directly why anyone would believe him after two suspensions for false statements , his answer was one sentence. He disputes everything.

The courtroom as a weapon of revenge

For Dieters, litigation is not a last resort. It is a way of life. He sued the Kenton County District Attorney for defamation. He sued Kelly Craft for the nomination . In 2024, he also sued Rep . Thomas Massey for the nomination. The court dismissed the lawsuit , he appealed, and Massey sought sanctions for violations of the code of civil procedure .

Even when he was unlicensed, he did not stay away from the courts. The Kentucky Bar Association sought to hold him in contempt for, it claimed, conducting lawsuits behind the scenes while on probation, advising clients without another attorney present.

The eternal loser of the ballot box

Dieters always wanted to be a player. Voters had other ideas. In 2023 , he ran for the Republican nomination for governor of Kentucky and finished fourth with about 6 percent. Trump , whom he had been a staunch supporter, endorsed his opponent, Attorney General Daniel Cameron . Cameron himself later pulled out of Dieters’ Freedom Fest after Massie publicly questioned why a gubernatorial candidate would appear at an event for someone with such a history.

In 2024, he tried his luck against Massie in the 4th District. The result was humiliating. Massie won 76%, while Dieters came in third with 11.5%, behind even a candidate who ran a limited campaign. Meanwhile, Gov. Andy Beshear was calling on all elected officials to condemn his racist slurs.

Next target: the vice president

Guilfoyle’s resignation didn’t satisfy him. It emboldened him. That same day, on Katie Pavlich’s show on NewsNation , Dieters made it clear that the ambassador would not be his final target if the administration didn’t meet his demands. He singled out J.D. Vance as someone who ignored his request and said he had no intention of letting him get away with it.

He revealed that he has already sent new emails to White House officials , including Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. His demand is couched in blackmail terms. Extradition and investigation of Durrani, or he will not only sue Guilfoyle but “will never be silent.” He added that the administration does not want this story to continue and that, if it does not do what he asks, it will make sure it continues.

This is a threat of political attrition, not physical violence. But the logic is clear. An individual with a criminal record is trying to impose his agenda on the White House by using publicity as leverage.

The lawyers’ response that demolishes Dieters’ lies

Guilfoyle’s lawyers, Jesse Binal and David Schwartz , responded with a detailed written statement on Sunday evening, October 11, two days before the resignation . The picture they paint is completely different from that of Dieters. It is not a bribe but an unpaid debt.

According to the statement, Deeters hired Guilfoyle as a keynote speaker at Freedom Fest, the event he was using to build his political profile. On May 20, 2024, she signed a written contract through an agency, with a fee of $200,000 payable by May 31. She also agreed to pay for strategic communications and fundraising services, an agreement that a third witness has testified to under oath.

Dieters, according to the lawyers, did not fulfill his obligations . He missed the deadline and for months sporadically sent a few transfers, accompanied by excuses. In his own messages, he blames his partner and lawyers, and describes himself as a millionaire in financial difficulty. About $ 150,000 for speeches and consulting in 2024 and early 2025 remains unpaid.

When Guilfoyle was preparing to enter public service, they explain, she simply tried to close her outstanding claims , as any professional would do. “Asking a client to pay for work already done is not corruption,” they write . Dieters’ quid pro quo, they say, is an uncooperative client being asked to pay an overdue bill.

The statement turns Dieters’ words against him. It recalls that he admitted that he overpaid to cultivate connections in Trump’s world and that he offered her a million dollars to promote his private legal case to government officials. She refused. He, they note, has admitted that he never paid the balance and that he received nothing from her.

Regarding the trips, the lawyers argue that before each flight on a private jet , the ambassador requested, received and followed the instructions of the State Department and adhered to the rules of conduct , gifts and declarations, something that they say the embassy has confirmed. They are considering, as they said, all available legal remedies to collect the debt.

After the resignation, lawyers insisted that the messages had not been authenticated, since they had not been analyzed in their original form, and told Newsweek that Guilfoyle served with integrity, honor, and distinction.

Kimberly Guilfoyle has no intention of remaining silent…

Behind the noise is a tenure with a historic imprint. On November 4, 2025, Guilfoyle became the first female U.S. ambassador to Greece. A former attorney general in San Francisco and Los Angeles, she made energy security a central priority of her tenure, convincing a half-dozen countries, from Albania to Romania to Ukraine, to express their intent to buy American natural gas through the Vertical Corridor.

A few days earlier, Marco Rubio praised her as an extremely effective advocate for Trump’s agenda, and that same week they jointly inaugurated a new wing of the embassy in Athens.

Even on the day of her departure, the White House called her a valuable member of the team and Trump himself acknowledged that she did a good job . Vice President Vance had reminded a few days earlier that these are accusations and that no one is tried in the court of public opinion. And when a publication attributed to her some words that were presented as a threat to Greece, Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis, who was present, publicly denied that there had been any threat.

However, she has no intention of backing down. In her resignation statement, she called the allegations false and promised to vigorously defend her name, reputation and integrity. “ I will not allow false accusations to define my decades of public service,” she wrote. At the same time, she remained loyal to Trump and the America First movement, thanking the president and Rubio for their trust.

Guilfoyle categorically denies any wrongdoing. No authority has found her guilty of anything.

The Wall Street Journal says it has verified the messages, and the State Department’s Office of Inspector General is reviewing the case. That investigation must be completed. Until then, however, there is an elementary question for any serious reader. How much trust is there in an accuser who lost his license for false statements, was convicted of threats, confesses to being motivated by revenge, and openly threatens the Vice President of the United States? Kimberly Guilfoyle has lost her position. She has not lost the presumption of innocence. And the big question remains: Who or what benefits from Kimberly Guilfoyle’s removal from the important position at the embassy in Athens. Some show organized interests that are systematically undermining the Trump administration and its officials. And others, who are the majority, are pointing fingers at Turkish provocation, because the Erdogan regime is opposed to the vertical corridor and the important role of Greece.
