Terrifying revelations about the farmers' terrorism ring in Crete

Crete, a place long associated with tradition, pride and hard work, found itself at the center of a dark affair that shocked the local community from Vorizia to Amari .

For an entire five years, a pervasive regime of terror and silence had spread over the farmers and ranchers of the area, who found themselves defenseless against the actions of an organized family ring .

This criminal group, led by an uncle and his two nephews, had turned the daily lives of the locals into a nightmare, using violence and extortion as key tools to impose its rule. The fear of reprisals was so intense that most residents preferred to endure the damage rather than speak out, watching their properties being looted.

Behind this systematic terror was not some blind vendetta, but a well-coordinated economic plan aimed at illegally extracting European subsidies through OPEKEPE .

The gang operated in a completely cynical manner: it encroached on foreign farmland, proceeded to uncontrolled grazing of its herds and cultivated land without any consent whatsoever from the legal owners. Subsequently, the leaders together with their wives submitted false declarations to the system, presenting foreign properties and non-existent livestock as their own assets. The financial fraud that was set up brought the gang huge profits, which according to the authorities exceed half a million euros , depriving the real producers of the Cretan land of valuable resources.

Those farmers who dared to stand up or refused to comply with the encroachers’ instructions were immediately confronted with the fury of retaliation . The gang did not hesitate to proceed with complete destruction of crops and arson , forcing many owners to abandon their properties in fear. The research data captures the extent of the savagery, as hundreds of olive trees were uprooted , entire vineyards were destroyed with electric saws and personal vehicles were set on fire as warning messages.

More than forty victims have been identified in this long list of violence, with hardworking people seeing a lifetime of work wiped out in a matter of hours.

The countdown to dismantling the criminal organization began when the scattered complaints began to be connected, prompting the intervention of the Greek FBI (Organized Crime Directorate).

The coordinated investigation by the police authorities unraveled the tangle of their actions, revealing that the three main defendants had even recruited younger members of their family to expand their network of influence. The heavy indictment that was drawn up includes offenses such as gang and criminal organization , repeated extortion, as well as distinguished damage to other people’s property by fire .

Despite the weight of evidence, the defense is attempting to downplay the violence charges, presenting documents about subletting properties and claiming that the pretrial detention of its clients was excessive, although it acknowledges that the subsidy fraud aspect requires further judicial examination.

Despite the arrests and the rapid developments, the local community in Amari remains deeply affected, with residents’ mouths still kept shut for fear of possible new reprisals. The psychological pressure exerted over the years has left indelible marks, and those affected are now calling for an exemplary administration of justice that will act as redemption.

The big issue for the region is not only the punishment of the natural perpetrators, but the complete liberation of the countryside from the specter of intimidation, so that people can cultivate their land with safety, dignity and without the fear that their labor will become the object of illegal exploitation.
