The strong smell began to be felt shortly before 12 noon in areas mainly in the southern suburbs of Attica, causing disruption to the residents of the Basin, although it gradually began to fade. There were many who contacted State services and municipalities to find out what was happening, but without receiving answers to their questions.
For its part, the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection announced that no leak or other damage has been detected so far at the Revithoussa facilities or elsewhere in the network, while it stressed that there is no indication of increased pollutants or any other indication other than the unpleasant odor, based on the data from the fixed meters so far. ESKEDIK received several calls from 11:40 for the smell of LPG and Fire Department vehicles were immediately deployed to carry out checks at the points from which the reports came.
In communication with DESFA , it was officially confirmed that these incidents are not related to the high-pressure network as it does not pass through the specific areas, while no pressure drop has been detected at any point in the system. At the same time, crews of the distribution network operator ( Enaon EDA ) are carrying out extensive inspections in Attica, with an emphasis on the southern suburbs, from which no gas leak into the atmosphere has occurred so far. Accordingly, the Operations Center of the Coast Guard carried out extensive inspections on passing gas transport ships without reporting anything relevant, while the Helleniq and Motor Oil refineries noted that no problem has been detected in their facilities nor is there a similar odor in Thriasio. The General Secretary of the Environment of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy, the Department of Environmental Inspectors, as well as the competent Environmental Directorate of the Attica Region have been informed of the incident from the beginning, while the investigations are continuing.
The phenomenon extensively affected the municipalities of the Southern Suburbs, specifically Nea Smyrni, Paleo Faliro, Agios Dimitrios, Kallithea, Glyfada and Alimos.
The mayor of Kallithea, Costas Askounis, and the mayor of Alimos, Andreas Kondylis, reported that they contacted the natural gas company, which appeared categorical that this was not their leak.
The Municipality of Nea Smyrni explained that the PERPA (Pollution Reduction and Oil & Gas Saving) service provided assurance that the odor is not the result of dangerous environmental pollution .
Both the Municipality of Nea Smyrni and the Municipality of Agios Dimitrios, in collaboration with the Civil Protection Departments , have been on full alert from the very beginning and in constant communication with state agencies in order to accurately identify the source of the odor . Until the phenomenon is completely eliminated and for purely preventive reasons, the municipalities recommend that residents remain indoors with closed windows .
