The new US ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle , made her first official visit to Alexandroupolis on Tuesday. Her presence in the border city, although brief in duration, had a strong geopolitical weight , as it took place at a critical juncture for the security of the wider region and NATO’s eastern flank .
Mrs. Guilfoyle did not hide her enthusiasm for this trip, sending a clear message from the very first minutes about the importance that Washington attaches to Thrace:
“This region has always been such a vital and strategic hub for the United States of America. I was very much looking forward to this trip,” he said.
The Triptych of Cooperation: Energy, Military and Logistics
During her contacts with local and institutional bodies, the American diplomat focused on the upgraded role that Alexandroupolis now plays on the international map. According to local media, the discussion was described as “wonderful” and revolved around three main pillars:
- Military Cooperation: Alexandroupolis is now a key gateway for entry and transportation of allied forces.
- Energy: The city is evolving into a critical energy hub for diversifying the supply sources of Southeastern Europe.
- Logistics: Its geographical location offers a safe and alternative route for global transport, bypassing the Dardanelles Straits.
“Not only is it of imperative importance to the relationship between the United States and Greece, but also to our NATO allies… Therefore, we look forward to expanding this effort ,” the ambassador emphasized, essentially announcing further American investment and support for projects in the region.
A Clear Message of Support in Athens
Kimberly Guilfoyle’s visit concluded with a strong statement of support for the Greek government, recognizing Athens’ consistency as a pillar of stability in a troubled neighborhood.
She wanted to make it clear that the alliance between the two countries is not merely formal, but deep and substantial:
“I simply wanted to come to show my respect, my interest, and my appreciation for all that Greece has done for the United States, as well as to reiterate that the United States will always be a steadfast ally of the Hellenic Republic.”
