Six Turkish unmanned aerial vehicles committed nine violations of air traffic rules within the Athens FIR and eight violations of national airspace on Monday, August 24, according to official data from the General Staff of National Defense.
Turkish UAV activity was recorded in three different areas: the northeastern , central and southeastern Aegean Seas , covering essentially the entire maritime area from north to south.
According to the daily briefing of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff, the six aircraft moved individually , without any formations being recorded, while none of them carried weapons . No engagements were recorded during the day.
The Turkish drones were identified and intercepted by Greek media, in accordance with the prescribed procedure and international rules.
It is recalled that the Hellenic National Defense General Staff distinguishes between violations and infringements : the former concern the failure to comply with air traffic rules within the Athens FIR — for example, the failure to submit a flight plan — while the latter concern the entry of aircraft into Greek national airspace without permission.
The increased use of unmanned aircraft in the Aegean has been a consistent feature of Turkish aviation activity in recent times, with UAVs largely replacing fighter jet flights, while maintaining the same rate of recordings.
