Cyprus is not only being lost to weapons. It is also being lost to silence.

Fifty-two years after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, the occupation remains an open wound for Hellenism. However, as infuriating as it is that Turkey continues to illegally occupy the northern part of the island, it is equally worrying that it continues to win the battle of international image , systematically investing in propaganda, while the Greek side continues to limit itself to anniversary statements and diplomatic platitudes.

Ankara is not content with occupying territory. It has been seeking for decades to capture the international consciousness as well . With state-funded media outlets, such as TRT World , with English-language content, documentaries, reports and organized information campaigns, it is attempting to present the 1974 invasion as a supposedly “peace operation” . It is trying to present the invaders as guarantors of stability, to present the Turkish Cypriots as “equal co-owners” of the island and to erase from the historical narrative the war crimes , massacres , the forced displacement of thousands of people , illegal settlement and the successive UN condemnations .

These are not piecemeal moves. This is a long-term state strategy , designed with patience, adequate funding and a clear goal: to shape a new international narrative, especially among the younger generations, but also among those who are unaware of the true dimensions of the Cyprus problem.

And while Turkey works tirelessly to impose its own version of history, the Greek side seems to be watching almost awkwardly. Where is the Greek communication counterattack? Where is the international English-speaking media that will present the truth in a documented manner? Where are the organized information campaigns in the United States , Europe , universities , think tanks , media and decision-making centers ?

The answer, unfortunately, is disappointing. There is no comprehensive strategy. There are only the established announcements every July, the statements about “let us not forget” and the formal references to respect for International Law. The next day, however, the issue disappears from the political agenda, once again leaving free field for Turkish propaganda to operate undisturbed.

The government constantly repeats the narrative of a “strong Greece,” but real strength is not measured only by armament programs or defense agreements. It is also measured by a country’s ability to effectively defend historical truth , influence international public opinion , and counter disinformation in an organized manner.

In modern times, wars are not only fought on battlefields. They are also fought in the media , on social networks , in international forums , in classrooms , and even in Internet search engines. That is where impressions are formed, that is where new “history” is often written, and that is where the associations of the next day are judged.

At the same time, developments around the Cyprus issue remain particularly critical. The upcoming new UN initiative and the presence of Antonio Guterres in Cyprus raise legitimate concerns about the content of the discussions that may follow. And the question that arises is clear: is there a clear national strategy or are we simply waiting for developments to adapt to them?

Because history has shown that every time Hellenism enters into critical negotiations without a structured plan , without international support and without communication preparation , it is faced with faits accomplis that it is later called upon to manage.

It is not enough to condemn the invasion , occupation , ethnic cleansing , colonization and violations of International Law once a year. The defense of Cyprus requires continuous political will , constant diplomatic mobility , generous funding , modern means of communication and a long-term national strategy that will not be exhausted by anniversary statements.

Cyprus does not need another anniversary full of words. It needs systematic internationalization of the Cyprus problem , active defense of historical truth, and a Greece that will stop reacting only when provoked. Because when you abandon the battle of information, sooner or later you risk losing the battle of History itself.
