Andros stands out in the archipelago as a charming paradox of the Cyclades, combining the wild sea breeze with an unexpected hinterland of running waters , verdant gorges and centuries-old plane trees.

Just two hours away from the port of Rafina, the northernmost and second largest island of the complex refuses the classic arid Cycladic landscape, choosing to tell a story of deep seafaring , rich spirituality and authentic architectural nobility.

The tour begins in Andros Town , a peninsula paved with white marble and framed by imposing neoclassical captain’s houses with Venetian influences. Walking along the main pedestrian street, the visitor feels the pulse of an aristocratic society that loved the arts as much as the sea.

Here, the Vasilis & Eliza Goulandris Foundation Museum of Contemporary Art dominates, a beacon of culture that hosts world-class exhibitions every summer. At the edge of the city, in Riva Square, the bronze statue of the Lost Sailor gazes out to sea, while a little further on, amidst the waves, rises the fairytale Tourlitis Lighthouse , the only lighthouse in Europe built on a natural sea cliff.

Leaving the coastline, the inland reveals a completely different aspect. At Menites , gurgling waters gush tirelessly through marble lion heads under dense shade, while at Apoikia the famous Sariza thermal spring has been refreshing hikers for centuries. Walking enthusiasts discover an earthly paradise on Andros Routes , an award-winning and certified European network of trails that exceeds one hundred kilometers. The cobblestone streets, bordered by the characteristic Androsian aemasies and columns , lead to arched stone bridges, perched monasteries such as the castle town of Panachrantou Monastery , and imposing dovecotes.

The island’s coastline offers constant changes. From the cosmopolitan and sheltered Batsi to the steep beach of Tis Grias to Pidima with its emblematic monolith, Andros hides beaches for every mood. To the east, Achla enchants with its lagoon and the small river with plane trees that flows into the beach, while to the north, Zorkos and Vitali offer deep turquoise waters amidst wild rocky scenery.

Each tour concludes in traditional cafes and taverns, where the star is the fourtalia , the rich local omelet with potatoes, local pork sausage and mint, accompanied by soft volaki or spicy petroti . To close, the famous Andriot almond cakes and pastitsaki, flavored with flower water from local bitter oranges, seal the sweet memory of an island that maintains its soul unchanged over time.

Top Settlements & Culture

  • Chora: The stately capital is distinguished by its neoclassical captain’s houses, marble cobblestone streets, the Venetian Castle and the iconic Tourlitis lighthouse. It is home to the internationally renowned Museum of Contemporary Art of the Vasilis & Eliza Goulandris Foundation and the Archaeological Museum.

  • Batsi: The liveliest seaside settlement, built amphitheatrically around a sheltered bay, with dining and nightlife options.

  • Menites & Stenies: Lush green villages full of running water, springs with lion heads, centuries-old plane trees and imposing stone towers.

  • Korthi: Quiet seaside village in the south, ideal for those seeking authenticity and traditional tavernas.

Beaches

  • The Old Woman’s Jump: The most recognizable coast of the island, characteristic for the high rock that rises from the sea.

  • Achla: A secluded paradise with fine pebbles, plane trees and a river that flows into the coast (accessible via a passable dirt road or by boat from Chora).

  • Zorkos & Vitali: Northern beaches of wild beauty with crystal clear, deep turquoise waters and impressive rock formations.

  • Golden Sands & Agios Petros: Organized, sandy and shallow beaches near the port of Gavrio, suitable for families and water sports.

Hiking & Activities

  • Andros Routes: A certified European network of trails of over 100 km (Leading Quality Trails – Best of Europe) that crosses gorges, arched bridges and watermills.

  • Historical Monasteries: The Monastery of Panachrantos (perched on the slopes of Gerakona) and the Monastery of Agia Marina are important religious and historical monuments with panoramic views.

Gastronomy

  • Fourtalia: The famous Andrian traditional omelette with potatoes, local sausages and mint.

  • Cheese: Try the creamy volaki and the spicy petroti .

  • Sweets: Famous almond cakes with flower water, kaltsounia and pastitsakia from the traditional patisseries of Chora.

Due to the large size and mountainous terrain of the island, a car is essential. May, June and September are the ideal months for touring and hiking without the strong meltemi winds of August.
