Two Afghan illegal immigrants have been found guilty of raping a woman in a park at knifepoint, in a case that has shocked British public opinion and brought to the fore the issue of safety in public spaces , as well as controls surrounding immigration policy and asylum in the United Kingdom.

The incident took place on August 16 last year in Barking Park , east London. According to the court, the victim was in the park with a man she had met through an online dating app . The couple were sitting under the night sky when they were attacked by the two defendants, Khan Agha and Nurullah Ahmadzai .

According to the prosecution, the two perpetrators restrained the couple and threatened the man with a knife , warning him that they would kill him if he tried to call the police. Immediately afterwards, according to the case file and the court decision, they proceeded to sexually assault the woman , in an attack that the prosecutor described as a “horrifying rape at knifepoint.” As she emphasized, the perpetrators treated the victim as “an object they could use and abuse.”

Of particular importance in the development of the case was the DNA evidence , which was found on the victim’s clothing and directly linked the two men to the attack. The jury rejected the claim of one of the defendants that the sexual intercourse was supposedly consensual and, after approximately nine hours of deliberations , reached a verdict of guilt .

The case is also gaining even more publicity due to the immigration profile of the defendants. According to the information presented, Ahmadzai had arrived in Britain by small boat in August 2023 and was initially accommodated in a London hotel as part of the asylum process. His application was later rejected, while an appeal process had already begun. For his part, Agah , who had also entered the United Kingdom illegally , tried during the trial to dispute his age, claiming that he was a minor at the time of the attack. However, court documents state different information and the court requested a special report to accurately determine his age.

The sentences are expected to be announced in October , while British authorities are already considering the possibility of deporting the two men after serving their sentences. The case has already opened a new round of debate in Britain, not only about violence against women and the need for more effective protection of victims, but also about the gaps that – according to many – still exist in the management of irregular migration flows and the control of people entering the country.

This is a case that combines brutal criminal violence , a traumatic violation of human dignity and serious questions about the security and functioning of institutions , causing legitimate indignation and intense concern in British society.
