Areas of Thesprotia and Ioannina were placed in a state of emergency, following the strong earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale that occurred in the early hours of Sunday, March 8, in the wider region of Epirus.
Specifically, a state of emergency was declared in the Municipality of Ioannina and the Municipality of Dodoni of the Regional Unit of Ioannina, as well as the Municipal Unit of Paramythia of the Municipality of Souli in the Regional Unit of Thesprotia.
The decision was taken following an order from the Secretary General of the General Secretariat of Civil Protection , Nikos Papaefstathiou , in order to immediately activate the mechanisms for dealing with emergency situations.
The declaration of areas in a state of emergency aims to manage the consequences of the earthquake , to accelerate inspections of infrastructure and buildings, and to facilitate restoration procedures where necessary.
Local authorities and Civil Protection teams are already carrying out checks on residences, public buildings and basic infrastructure , while the recording of possible damage from the earthquake that shook the wider region of Epirus continues.
