Greek-Turkish relations are once again entering a dangerous trajectory of escalation, as Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s recent decision to declare two “national marine parks” in the Aegean was immediately transferred from the diplomatic field to the airwaves.
Ankara chose to confirm its claims in practice through a coordinated and multi-level air activity, sharply raising the mercury of tension over the archipelago and effectively dissolving the climate of relative calm of the previous months.
The operational footprint of the day was particularly heavy, with the Turkish Air Force committing 25 violations of national airspace and 14 violations of air traffic rules within the Athens FIR . This activity was not limited to isolated points, but spread across the Northeast, Central and Southeast Aegean , confirming the neighboring country’s strategy of maintaining active pressure across the entire breadth of Greek territory.
Of particular concern is the qualitative upgrade of the Turkish presence, as out of all the violations, eight were carried out by F-16 fighter jets . In fact, two of the Turkish fighter jets were flying fully armed , which underlines the intention to demonstrate power. The tension peaked when the illegal activity of the Turkish aircraft evolved into a virtual dogfight with a Greek fighter on alert , highlighting the serious dangers that lurk in any such interception over the Aegean.
The Turkish operation relied on a complex composition of forces. A total of seven aircraft operated in three different formations, combining conventional fighters with electronic and unmanned surveillance means. The lion’s share of the illegal actions was recorded by the four Turkish unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) , which are responsible for 17 violations and 9 FIR violations , reflecting Ankara’s now established tactic of utilizing low-cost drones to continuously challenge sovereign rights. At the same time, a CN-235 naval cooperation spy aircraft also operated in the airspace, which recorded 2 violations of flight rules, performing intelligence-gathering missions.
Faced with the new challenge, the Greek side’s reaction was immediate and decisive. According to an official announcement from the General Staff of National Defense (GHND) , all Turkish aircraft were identified and intercepted by Greek fighter jets on alert, in accordance with international rules and established national practice.
This escalation demonstrates that Ankara is using environmental rhetoric and “marine parks” as a new lever of geopolitical pressure. By turning an initiative of a supposedly ecological nature into a tool for challenging sovereignty, the Turkish leadership is reinstating the doctrine of tension in the Aegean, keeping the Greek armed forces in a constant state of alert and operational readiness .
