The Greek diaspora in Melbourne is in the trenches over the provocations of the Macedonians

The issue of “Macedonian” , an issue that for decades indelibly marked the relations of the Greek diaspora with organized groups of people originating from North Macedonia, seems to be returning dynamically and with particular intensity to the forefront of Australian public life.

At a time when many had the illusion that the 2019 Prespa Agreement had succeeded, at least at an institutional and diplomatic level, in definitively closing a long chapter of international confrontation, the latest events in Melbourne have come to overturn everything. The reality clearly demonstrates that this national and cultural tension has not only not been eliminated, but is dangerously rekindled on multiple levels, affecting politics, culture, local communities and the battle of symbols in Australia’s multicultural society.

The spark that reignited the controversy is found in the recent and highly controversial decision of the organizing committee of the large, traditional MOOMBA parade. In an apparent attempt to prevent possible incidents and maintain balance, the organizers decided to ban the use of national symbols , specifically targeting the Sun of Vergina . This symbol has been the ultimate point of friction between the Greek community and the organizations of the Slavic-Macedonian diaspora for years. However, this move, instead of acting as a pacifier and de-escalating the charged climate, achieved the exact opposite, opening wide a new, uncontrolled cycle of violent reactions.

The situation became even more complicated a few days later, when the scene of tension was transferred from the streets to the sports fields. During an official match of the popular AFL team Collingwood , a group of people from North Macedonia appeared in the stands, provocatively holding flags with the Sun of Vergina . This incident immediately came to the attention of the Greek community and provoked the immediate reaction of the well-known Greek activist Sam Kostoulias . Mr. Kostoulias did not let the incident go unnoticed and sent an official written protest to the club’s management, clearly emphasizing that this specific action constitutes a direct provocation, as it appropriates a purely Greek historical symbol and blatantly violates the spirit and letter of the Prespa Agreement.

The response issued by Collingwood to Mr. Kostoulias, however, was purely corporate and neutral, avoiding taking a clear position on the substance of the national issue. In its letter, the club stated that it recognizes the deep meaning that cultural and historical symbols have for various communities and thanked the Greek activist for taking the time to explain the importance of the issue. However, the team clarified that it had reviewed the correspondence, the images and the AFL’s Ticket and Entry Conditions , according to which fans are generally allowed to bring flags into the playing fields, provided that size and safety specifications are met. These regulations do not limit flags exclusively to official national flags, while it is clarified that although political inscriptions and the distribution of political material are prohibited , the final assessment of whether something falls within these prohibitions is made solely by the AFL and the stadium officials on the day of the match, depending on the context and circumstances of the moment, thus removing any relevant responsibility from the Club itself.

The real climax of the crisis, however, occurred away from the stadiums, taking on intense political and diplomatic dimensions during an anniversary event of the organization “Macedonian Orthodox Youth of Australia” (MOYA) , which was held in the Sunshine West area. What angered the Greek side was not just the gathering itself, but the fact that official representatives of both the state government and the opposition , as well as diplomatic representatives of North Macedonia , were “present” at it. The icing on the cake of the provocation was that in all public reports, speeches and official digital posts of the organization MOYA, the term “Republic of Macedonia” was systematically and deliberately used, completely ignoring the internationally recognized and legal name “North Macedonia”.

This public use of the banned term sparked a fierce and organized reaction from the Pan-Macedonian Union of Melbourne and Victoria . Reacting immediately, the president of Pan-Macedonian, Petros (Panagiotis) Stefanidis , and the secretary, Haris Tsairis , drafted and sent multi-page, stern letters of protest to the two highest political figures in the state: the Premier of Victoria, Jacinta Allan , and the Leader of the Opposition, Jess Wilson . In these official documents, the leadership of Pan-Macedonian denounces in the most categorical manner that the use of the term “Republic of Macedonia” constitutes a blatant violation of the Prespa Agreement , which has legally secured the name “North Macedonia” against everyone internationally.

At the same time, Messrs. Stefanidis and Tsairis expressed the strong dissatisfaction and disappointment of the Greek diaspora for the presence of Labor and Liberal MPs at the event in question. According to Pammakedoniki, the active participation of Australian politicians in such events is unacceptable, as it creates the false impression of political tolerance or even indirect acceptance of an illegal terminology that is in complete contradiction with international law and the official positions of Australia itself. The letters place enormous emphasis on the issue of cultural and historical identity, with the Greek side making it clear that the term “Macedonian” can in no way be monopolized by a single community. On the contrary, it is emphasized that it constitutes an integral, structural part of the historical heritage of millions of Greeks, who originate directly from the three official regions of the Greek territory: Central, Western and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace .

To strengthen its arguments, the Pan-Macedonian Union proceeded with an extensive retrospective of Australia’s historical ties with Greek Macedonia , reminding Australian politicians of events that forged the friendship of the two peoples on the battlefields. Special mention was made of the participation and sacrifice of Australian soldiers on the Macedonian Front during the First World War, of the multifaceted humanitarian action of Major George Devine Treloar in Thrace and Macedonia immediately after the Asia Minor Catastrophe to rescue refugees, as well as of the joint, heroic war course of the Greeks and the ANZACs in the Battle of Greece and the Battle of Crete during the Second World War.

The legal arsenal of the Greek protest was supplemented by the invocation of fundamental international conventions. The letter explicitly refers to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) as well as the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity , wishing to demonstrate that no ethnic group has the right to claim the exclusivity of a cultural identity, especially when it is directed at the expense of another community with demonstrably deeper and indisputable historical ties to the region.

In this already charged climate, an additional source of internal tension erupted in the Greek community due to the presence of Greek Orthodox priests at the MOYA event . The participation of the clergy in an event dominated by the irredentist terminology of “Republic of Macedonia” was considered by many Macedonians of the diaspora as an unacceptable and deeply hurtful move.

The most worrying and essential conclusion that emerges from this chain of events is that the “Macedonian” issue no longer exists exclusively as a bilateral interstate dispute between Athens and Skopje. Instead, it is being transported and transformed within the social and political fabric of multicultural Australia , directly affecting the daily relations of immigrant communities, forcing major political parties to maneuver, and testing the resilience and public image of the country’s institutions.

The Greek community in Australia is sending a clear message that it is determined to protect by any legal means what it considers non-negotiable elements of its history, while the Slavo-Macedonian organizations insist on promoting their own narrative. What is certain is that this issue is far from closed, now entering a new, extremely fragile phase with unpredictable social and diplomatic implications.
