New space academy in the US signed by Trump - "You can't be first on Earth if you're second in Space"

In a dramatic move that directly links education to geopolitical competition, Donald Trump has signed an executive order to create a national academy to train future recruits for NASA and the space force . The move comes amid increasing competition in the sector, with China as its main rival.

The new body, to be called the United States Space Academy , was announced by the US president earlier during a medal ceremony at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, where he awarded the Artemis II crew the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.

“This is a very big deal,” Trump said, adding that the academy “will be dedicated to attracting, training and graduating the best talent our country has to offer.” The institution will provide leadership for NASA, the private space industry and the United States Space Force , the sixth branch of the military that he created during his first term. The location of the headquarters has not yet been determined.

The reasoning behind the decision was captured in a phrase that functions almost as a dogma. “A nation cannot be first on Earth if we are going to be second in Space. It’s just not going to happen. Somehow, it just doesn’t work that way,” the American president said.

In the same vein, he made an announcement with a much more technological significance. He said that NASA has already begun work on the first nuclear-powered interplanetary spacecraft , which is expected to be launched on a mission to Mars in 2028. He even clarified that this vessel may be the first of a broader American fleet, aiming to make space travel more common.

The establishment of the academy takes place at a time when Space has acquired a central position in strategic competitions, mainly in the military and technological fields.

The Trump administration is openly declaring that it is starting a “second Space Race”, this time with Beijing as its opponent, directly referring to the confrontation that had brought the United States and the Soviet Union together during the Cold War.

The analogy is not rhetorical. The two rival powers have set the same goal and almost the same timetable. Both aspire to send people to the Moon by 2030 and establish a permanent base there.

In this context, an academy that produces specialized personnel is not just an educational institution. It is an infrastructure. Ships are built in months, mechanical systems are designed in years, but the engineers, astronauts and executives who will operate them need a whole decade to mature. Investing in human resources is, in other words, the longest-term move in a competition that is already measured in decades.
