Experienced career diplomat Michalis Stamatis has assumed the duties of Consul General of Greece in Chicago , succeeding Emmanuel Koumbarakis , who completed his term in the American metropolis and is taking on a new diplomatic mission at the Embassy of Greece in India.
Mr. Stamatis, who holds the rank of Embassy Counselor A , entered the Diplomatic Academy in 2008 and has extensive and multi-level experience in critical positions abroad, having served in the Greek embassies in Ankara, Washington and Abu Dhabi , as well as at the Consulate General in Mariupol .
In parallel with his international career, he has held key staff positions in the Central Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens, including in the Diplomatic Offices of the Minister and the Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, in the Information Service and in the Directorate of European Integration and Economic and Monetary Union. He has a rich academic background, as he holds a degree in Political Science and a master’s degree in International Studies from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens , while he completed postgraduate studies at the renowned Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy of Tufts University as a scholar of the “Andreas David” program.
The new head of the Greek diplomatic mission in Chicago—who during his military service served as a Reserve Officer in the Special Forces (2nd Paratrooper Squadron) and is a father of three children—assumes his duties with the priority of strengthening relations and supporting the historic Greek diaspora in the Midwestern states of the USA.
