Two hundred years after the historic Exodus of Messolonghi (1826–2026) , one of the greatest and most poignant moments of self-sacrifice of the Greek Revolution returns to the international spotlight through the power of the image and philhellene creation.
On the occasion of the completion of two centuries since the emblematic event, distinguished researcher Dr. Spyridoula Dimitriou will present a special lecture on Thursday, September 3, 2026 at the Hellenic Centre of Melbourne on the topic: “The Bicentennial of the Exodus of Messolonghi (1826–2026): Philhellenic Art and Messolonghi as a National Symbol” . The event focuses on the way in which the martyred city was transformed into a global emblem of resistance, heroism and freedom, mobilizing European public opinion in support of the Greek struggle.
The tragedy and unparalleled grandeur of April 11, 1826 transcended the narrow geographical boundaries of Greece, deeply moving Western intellectuals and giving birth to a powerful visual language in the European 19th century. Through the works of prominent philhellene artists, the siege and the sacrifice of the “Free Besieged” were not simply a record of a historical drama, but a decisive means of political pressure and the shaping of collective memory . The lecture thoroughly analyzes this interaction between art, politics and the formation of national identity, illuminating how visual representations of the Exodus strengthened the philhellene movement in the West and established Messolonghi as a fundamental symbol of modern history.
The speaker, Dr. Spyridoula Dimitriou , specializes in research in philhellenic art, having completed her doctoral thesis at the University of Melbourne , while she was co-curator of the major anniversary exhibition “MESOLONGI 1826: 200 YEARS AFTER THE EXIT” at the Benaki Museum .
The lecture, which is an important milestone in the anniversary events for the Australian diaspora, will take place at 7:00 pm on the 12th floor of the Greek Centre (168 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne), commemorating the 200th anniversary of the sacrifice of the Mesolongites.
