Swedish authorities are now investigating online communities linked to school and mass violence in the deadly attack on a high school in the city of Fagersta, central Sweden. An 18-year-old man armed with a sword stormed the school , killing a 17-year-old student and injuring two other teenagers before being arrested by police.

Investigators are now attempting to reconstruct not only the young man’s movements before the attack, but mainly his digital footprint , looking for clues that could explain his motives and show whether he had been influenced by content that glorifies or promotes previous attacks on schools.

Of particular interest is a TikTok account that police are examining to determine whether it belonged to the 18-year-old. According to information reported by Reuters, the account posted a photo of a sword just 20 minutes before the attack .

The Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter reported that the photo in question appeared to have been taken in a toilet at the school itself . If it is confirmed that the account belonged to the accused, this element takes on particular weight, as it could indicate that the attack was not a completely spontaneous act, but had been preceded by some form of preparation.

The account, which was taken down after the attack , had only been created about a month earlier. Its content is now at the center of the investigation, as it allegedly included references to previous cases of mass violence in Sweden.

Among the material were, according to information so far, references to Anders Behring Breivik , the Norwegian far-right terrorist who carried out the deadly attacks in Norway in 2011.

Even more interesting is the alleged reference to the 2015 Trollhattan school stabbing . At that time, a masked assailant armed with a sword entered a school in western Sweden, killing a teacher and two students, before being shot dead by police.

The similarities in the weapon used are one of the elements being examined, but the authorities have not yet announced that there is a proven connection between the two cases.

The crucial question for researchers is whether the 18-year-old systematically viewed online content surrounding mass murders and school attacks and, most importantly, whether he actively participated in communities in which such acts are presented in a way that may encourage their imitation.

A police source said investigators are looking into different online communities that may have influenced or encouraged the suspect. However, no definitive conclusion has been reached on the motive at this time and authorities appear to be very cautious about the information they release.

The attack shocked Fagersta. The 18-year-old allegedly attacked students inside the school, resulting in the death of a 17-year-old girl and the injury of two other teenagers . Police arrived at the scene and proceeded to arrest him.

The 17-year-old’s parents confirmed to local newspaper Fagersta-Posten that their daughter was the victim of the attack, turning a case initially treated as a serious incident of violence into a homicide investigation .

The prosecution authorities ordered the detention of the 18-year-old, who is facing charges of murder and attempted murder .

Prosecutor Anne-Sophie Trossing clarified that the investigation is in full swing. Authorities are taking statements, gathering evidence and examining material that may shed light on the defendant’s movements and contacts before the attack.

The focus now falls on the 18-year-old’s digital devices, social media accounts and online contacts . Investigators are trying to determine if there was any specific online influence, if the young man had previously expressed intentions to commit violence or if he had left any electronic trail that could be considered a warning sign.

At the same time, the case reopens in Sweden the difficult debate about the familiarization of young Internet users with extreme and violent content , but also about the closed digital communities in which real tragedies can become objects of obsession or imitation.

At this stage, however, the authorities are refraining from prejudging the results. The existence of relevant content on an account does not in itself prove the motive for the attack , nor has it yet been officially confirmed that the account in question actually belonged to the accused.

This is exactly what the investigation is called upon to clarify: what led an 18-year-old to show up at a school with a sword and turn an ordinary school day into a tragedy . And most importantly, whether there were signs in the digital world before the attack that no one had noticed in time.
