An unspeakable family tragedy unfolded on Sunday afternoon in Rhodes , plunging the local community into mourning. A 57-year-old mother and her 26-year-old daughter , originally from the island, lost their lives in a shocking traffic accident that occurred in the Afantou area, following a severe head-on collision with another vehicle.
The accident occurred under circumstances that are still unclear. The authorities were immediately mobilized, with the Fire Department rushing to the scene to free the two women from the metal-filled mass of their car.
Mother and daughter were pulled out unconscious and rushed by EKAB ambulance to the island’s hospital, where unfortunately the doctors simply pronounced them dead .
The second vehicle was carrying three people – a father with his son and another woman – who were luckier, as they suffered injuries and were taken to the hospital for first aid, without their lives being in danger.
However, judicial developments in the case are rapid. The driver of the second car , immediately after leaving the emergency room, was arrested and is being held by the police authorities.
Criminal proceedings have already been initiated against him and he is expected to be brought before the competent prosecution authority today.
