The competent disciplinary authorities in Australia have imposed exemplary punishment on the Preston Lions football team, following the unacceptable incident involving the posting of offensive and anti-Greek banners by their Macedonian players during the match against the historic South Melbourne FC .
The appearance of vulgar nationalist messages in the stands caused a storm of reactions and deep indignation among the Greek diaspora , which demanded the immediate and strict intervention of the competent bodies to combat such phenomena of hate speech in the stadiums.
The authorities’ decision was a catapult, imposing an immediate deduction of three points through the activation of a previous suspended sentence that had been weighing down Preston Lions since 2025, as well as a hefty fine of $18,150 .
At the same time, the club—which had already been punished with two games behind closed doors for the same incident—was placed under strict restrictions on the presence of its fans.
In a clear institutional warning move, a new penalty of six points with suspension was also imposed, which will remain in effect until the start of the 2028 season.
Should the team commit any new disciplinary offenses by then, the penalty will be automatically activated, sending a clear message of zero tolerance towards bigotry and nationalistic provocations in the Australian sporting arena.
