The birthplace of Olympism is joining hands with a city that will host the Olympic Games in six years. Ancient Olympia is preparing to open a new path of friendship and cooperation with the Gold Coast of Australia, in a move with strong symbolism but also a clear practical horizon.
The link with the Queensland city, which is located near Brisbane and is expected to play a significant role in the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games , will be inaugurated next Tuesday, September 8, 2026 .
The twinning is an initiative of the Mayor of Gold Coast, Tom Tate , and was made possible thanks to the mediation and support of expatriate Georgios Mastrokostas , Honorary Consul General of Greece in Queensland.
The Municipality of Ancient Olympia has a long tradition of developing relationships with cities that host or have hosted the Olympic Games. In the case of the Gold Coast, however, there was an additional and particularly weighty reason for accepting the proposal, the strong presence of the Greek diaspora in the state. Approximately 32,000 people declare themselves of Greek origin in Queensland, constituting one of the most essential connecting links between the two sides.
The decision of the Municipality of Ancient Olympia, dated January 28, 2026 , highlights the importance of the agreement. “This twinning will be a useful tool for the development of joint projects, experiences, know-how and ways to improve the operations of our Municipality. It will also cultivate ties between people and organizations connected by their love for Olympism, especially in view of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games, which the city of Gold Coast will serve as a co-host city,” it specifically states.
The Gold Coast, for its part, also has a long tradition of international collaborations , having maintained sister city relationships with cities on different continents for decades. These partnerships have brought significant benefits in areas such as culture, education, tourism and sports, enhancing the exchange of knowledge and experiences even in the fields of health and medicine.
One of the most tangible results of the new relationship is expected to be cultural. Important exhibits from the Museum of Ancient Olympia are to travel to the Gold Coast, offering the Australian public a unique opportunity to experience first-hand the history and heritage of the birthplace of Olympism. This is a move with a strong symbolic charge, reflecting the timeless values of peace, brotherhood and cooperation between peoples.
Particular emphasis, however, is expected to be given to youth . The two municipalities seek to strengthen exchanges and communication between students of their schools, in order to create opportunities for acquaintance, cooperation and exchange of experiences. At the same time, the agreement provides for the more active participation of the local community and the development of collaborations between clubs, organizations and institutions , so that the twinning is not limited to a formal agreement.
That’s where such initiatives are usually judged. The new generations are the ones who can give real life to a twinning, transforming it into a living relationship between two societies which, despite the distance of thousands of kilometers, share common values and interests.
