New 3.7 Richter earthquake on Mount Athos — surface tremor northwest of Karya

An earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale occurred at 11:30 a.m. on Mount Athos. It was felt in the wider area without, however, causing concern among the residents and monks of the peninsula.

This is a magnitude that is at the limit where the earthquake is perceived, especially by those indoors or on higher floors, but is not accompanied by impacts on buildings or infrastructure.

According to the Geophysics Laboratory of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki , the epicenter was located fifteen kilometers northwest of Karya , the administrative capital of Mount Athos.

The same source spoke of a surface earthquake , a characteristic that has its own importance in reading the phenomenon: the smaller the focal depth , the more strongly a vibration is felt on the surface, even when its magnitude remains low. This is also the reason why earthquakes of the order of three to four on the Richter scale can sometimes be perceived in a way that is disproportionate to their actual energy, creating a sense of more intense activity than what the instruments record.

What is of interest to the scientific community is not the tremor itself, but rather the fact that it is part of a larger picture. Seismologists estimate that the activity is similar to that recorded in recent months on the Athos peninsula , an area that is under systematic monitoring . In other words, the 3.7 Richter earthquake is not an isolated incident, but another link in a chain of records that experts are examining in its entirety.

This type of long-term observation is, in practice, the basic tool of seismology. The significance of a tremor is not judged in isolation from its size, but from the spatiotemporal distribution of events. For example, how often they are repeated, whether the epicenter shifts, whether the depth remains constant, whether there is a tendency to increase or decrease. It is through this accumulation of data that scientists attempt to understand the behavior of the faults of a region and the way in which the energy accumulated in the earth’s crust is released.

Halkidiki and the wider region of the northern Aegean are not, after all, a seismically inactive zone. The Greek region as a whole is ranked among the most seismically active regions in Europe, with its geodynamic picture determined by the convergence of large tectonic plates and a dense network of active faults. In this context, the recording of small and medium-sized tremors is a regularity and not an exception.

The competent bodies, from the Geophysics Laboratory of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki to the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization , publish data in real time, while the earthquake-proof preparation of residential and work spaces continues to be the most essential protection measure.

For now, the picture that scientists describe is that of ongoing but controlled activity , which seismological networks are constantly recording and evaluating. How much the phenomenon on the Athos peninsula will evolve or de-escalate will be seen from the next recordings, and it is precisely these that will give experts the overall picture.
