A new, hopeful chapter opens for the Orthodox Orphanage of Matzouga in Madagascar, as with the blessing of the Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, His Holiness Theodore II , the local Holy Diocese of Matzouga and Northern Madagascar is proceeding with a substantial strategic partnership with the local municipality. The aim of this dynamic initiative is to fully upgrade the institution , improve daily living conditions and ensure a stable, safe future for the children who find refuge in its premises.
The orphanage carries a rich history of selfless service and is one of the brightest landmarks of the Orthodox Mission in Africa . The building was erected with the exclusive care and expense of the historic Philoptochos Brotherhood of Men of Thessaloniki , under the presidency of Theodore I. Dardavesis , a fact that was sealed with the placement of a commemorative plaque on January 21, 2011. In the intervening years, the structure was a warm embrace for dozens of orphaned children, but the passage of time and the difficult climatic conditions left their strong traces on the building infrastructure, making the need for a comprehensive regeneration imperative.
Responding to modern needs, the Holy Diocese began a fruitful dialogue with the municipal authorities, with the ultimate goal of officially assigning the management of the orphanage to the local Church. The proposal was received with particular warmth and enthusiasm by the Mayor of Matzouga , who expressed his full support for the project. Although the formal procedure awaits final ratification by the Municipal Council , the partnership has already been activated in practice, proving that love and care for children go beyond bureaucracy.
An extremely moving and symbolic moment was recently recorded in the courtyard of the structure, where the official raising of the Greek flag took place. The blue and white rose in the sky of Madagascar not simply as a national symbol, but as a global emblem of solidarity, Christian love and practical contribution of Hellenism to the suffering African people. At the same time, within the framework of the new collaboration, a joint unity meal is being organized with the participation of the Mayor, local officials, volunteers and the hosted children, inaugurating a new relationship of trust and common solidarity.
At the core of the immediate priorities of the Diocese is the extensive building reconstruction and renovation of the institution, both in the interior and in the surrounding courtyard. The plan foresees the creation of modern dormitories, study and entertainment spaces, ensuring decent, modern and safe hygiene and living conditions . As underlined by the Holy Diocese, the main goal is for the orphanage to regain its rightful place and to transform into a model center of protection and education , where every child will have the opportunity to dream and build a better tomorrow.
