A special evening dedicated to the timeless values of Olympism , the work of Kostis Palamas and the connection between sports and culture took place on Tuesday evening at the “Petros G. Patridis” hall of the Agios Dimitrios Community in Astoria .
The event was co-organized by the Fine Arts Association, Cultural-Olympism Center “Kostis Palamas”, with the support of the “Kostis Palamas” New York Patras Association and the Hellenic Canadian Congress , while the keynote speaker was Professor Dr. Theodoros Mallias on the topic “Olympic Ideals – Olympic Hymn / Kostis Palamas – Unfading Light”.
As part of the event, the book and museum album “Olympism” were presented by Queens College professor Nikos Alexiou , while at the same time a painting exhibition with a charitable and educational character, inspired by the poetry of Palamas, was inaugurated, which will remain open until June 6, with the proceeds going to the Agios Dimitrios school.
During the event, the organizers honored the president of the Hellenic American Chamber of Commerce, Eftychia Pylarinou-Piper , and the former president of the GAEPIS Foundation, Stelios Taketzis , for their contributions.
The president of the New York Patrons Association, Panos Papadopoulos-Seretis , pointed out that this year’s action is a continuation of last year’s initiative that was included in the Greek Parade in New York with the participation of Pyrros Dimas, while expressing the intention to establish similar events on an annual basis with the active participation of Olympic medalists.
This important cultural intervention was part of a broader program for Olympic Education , the historical heritage of Hellenism and the completion of the historical anniversaries from the first Modern Olympic Games of 1896 and the establishment of the Lighting of the Olympic Flame.
