Elon Musk has entered a new, head-on conflict with the British government, launching a fierce attack against the United Kingdom through his platform, X.
The billionaire tech mogul did not hesitate to describe Britain as a “prison island” , demanding the immediate release of those convicted for their online activity, thus opening a new round of discussions about the limits of freedom of speech in Western Europe.
This new position came in response to a post by well-known right-wing activist Tommy Robinson. Musk, taking a clear position, wrote characteristically: “The thousands of Britons who were imprisoned simply for posting on social media or for expressing their opinion must be released!”, completing with a particularly sharp tone the phrase “End the prison island!!” .
This public intervention is not an isolated incident, but the latest in a long series of criticisms of the British authorities by the owner of the X platform. Musk has become one of the most vocal and prominent critics of the country’s immigration policies , as well as Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s policy of policing digital speech and suppressing extremist rhetoric.
Musk’s rhetoric against London has been consistently high-pitched, as he has previously publicly warned that the United Kingdom is dangerously sliding towards “George Orwell’s worst nightmare.”
With his new intervention, Musk attempts to portray Britain as a negative example of a Western democracy that, under the guise of security and combating disinformation, sacrifices freedom of expression , turning digital activism into a criminal offense.
