Why Cyprus is gaining increasing value in American planning - Christodoulides: "The sky is the limit" for Cyprus-United States relations

“The sky is the limit.” With this phrase, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides described the relations between Nicosia and Washington , at a time when the strategic cooperation between the two countries is acquiring an increasingly clear defense and geopolitical content .

The relationship has now moved from the level of diplomatic declarations to something tangible: infrastructure , training , military exercises , and a growing American presence on the island.

The position of the new American ambassador, John Breslow , is characteristic, who spoke about the plans to expand the facilities at the American base in Paphos . Referring to the defense cooperation roadmap for the period 2024-2029 , he spoke of a “very bright” future, while announcing more visits by American warships and joint exercises.

In terms of infrastructure, the plans are specific. At the Andreas Papandreou Air Base in Paphos, expansion of space is planned, so that large transport aircraft can be served. At a second base, in Mari , infrastructure for large helicopters is planned. The American side presents the facilities mainly as possibilities for evacuations of settlements , humanitarian operations and response to regional crises.

This technical description, however, does not hide the strategic dimension. Infrastructure capable of receiving large transports and heavy helicopters translates, in the language of military design, into the ability to rapidly project forces. And Cyprus is within a stone’s throw of the Middle East , at a time when the region remains the most unstable place on the planet.

The political signal of the rapprochement came from the Cypriot president himself. Christodoulides described relations as closer than ever , calling the US Cyprus’s closest ally in the areas of defense , security and intelligence .

He also spoke particularly positively of US President Donald Trump , arguing that he has a “unique advantage” in international negotiations, as his position is clear and his interlocutors know where they stand vis-à-vis him. He also stressed that despite the differences arising between Europe and the US, Europe “does not have the luxury” of a transatlantic rift .

The interview took on additional political significance when the US president himself republished it on his Truth Social account. Trump posted the title and link, without commenting on it himself, but giving significant exposure to Christodoulides’ statements.

This move is not insignificant. The personal republishing by the American president acts as a tacit endorsement of what was said, and in a way that addresses a wider audience than that of diplomacy. For Nicosia, this is a recognition that few countries of its size receive.
