One of the most important energy projects in the Eastern Mediterranean is entering its most critical phase , as energy giants Eni and TotalEnergies are one step away from making the final investment decision for the development of the “Kronos” natural gas field, which is located in the Cypriot EEZ. If the schedule is met, the decision is expected to be made by the end of July , paving the way for an investment of particular geopolitical and energy importance.
According to information cited by Bloomberg , the two companies are completing the final technical and financial procedures in order to proceed with the implementation of the project. TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanne confirmed that the consultations are in the final stage and that the aim is to make the final investment decision in the coming days.
The importance of the project goes beyond the narrow confines of the Cypriot economy. The European Union continues to search for alternative and reliable sources of natural gas , following the drastic reduction in Russian energy flows and the intense upheavals caused by international geopolitical developments in energy markets. Within this environment, the deposits of the Eastern Mediterranean are gaining increasingly greater strategic value, as they can contribute to the diversification of Europe’s energy supply.
For the Republic of Cyprus , the investment in “Kronos” has even greater significance. It is set to be the country’s first commercial exploitation of an offshore natural gas field , more than ten years after the first significant hydrocarbon discoveries in the Cypriot EEZ. This development is expected to mark Cyprus’ entry into the international energy map as a producer and exporter of natural gas.
The plan foresees that the natural gas extracted from the field will be transported via subsea infrastructure to Egypt , where it will be liquefied at existing LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) production facilities. From there, it will be loaded onto special tankers and headed for European and international markets, with the first commercial quantities estimated to be available from 2028 .
The project is being developed through a joint venture in which Eni and TotalEnergies each have a 50% stake , while Italy’s Eni has assumed the role of project management company. According to Patrick Pouyanne, the investment will provide TotalEnergies with access to approximately 1.4 million tons of liquefied natural gas per year through the Egyptian facilities, significantly strengthening the company’s portfolio in the region.
Beyond the economic benefits, however, the promotion of “Kronos” may act as a catalyst for the development of other deposits in the Cypriot EEZ , accelerating the overall energy planning of the region. The successful implementation of the project could strengthen Cyprus’ role as a strategic energy hub in the Eastern Mediterranean , creating new prospects for both the Cypriot economy and European energy security, at a time when diversification of supply sources is a top priority.
