Deutsche Telekom is partnering with Starlink to bring satellite connectivity directly to mobile phones. The service is expected to launch in early 2028 in several European markets, including Greece via Cosmote Telekom.
Starlink Direct-to-Cell technology allows compatible smartphones to connect directly to satellites, without the need for special equipment or an external antenna. This will provide basic communication services, such as texting, voice calls and low-speed data, in areas where there is no coverage from terrestrial mobile networks.
The solution is mainly aimed at remote or inaccessible areas, where the development of conventional mobile telephony infrastructure is difficult or limited by geographical and environmental factors.
According to Deutsche Telekom, satellite connectivity will act as a supplementary network layer, covering places where terrestrial base stations cannot provide sufficient coverage. The company emphasizes that constant access to reliable connectivity enhances user security and trust.
Starlink sees the partnership as a significant step towards expanding satellite connectivity for mobile devices in Europe. The technology will be based on the next-generation V2 satellites, which will enable support for data, voice and messaging services directly to mobile devices.
Direct-to-device services will operate on Starlink’s MSS (Mobile Satellite Service) spectrum. When a compatible mobile phone loses terrestrial cellular signal, it will be able to automatically switch to the satellite network, ensuring basic communication even in areas without traditional coverage.
Deutsche Telekom points out that by the planned launch of the service in 2028, the number of compatible devices on the European market is expected to increase steadily, while the deployment of the new Starlink satellite constellation will have been completed.
At the same time, satellite connectivity is expected to enhance the resilience of telecommunications infrastructure. In cases of natural disasters or extensive power outages, satellite connectivity can provide alternative access to communication services.
Deutsche Telekom’s strategy is based on the principle that users should always have access to the best available connection, regardless of their location. Satellite technology complements the existing mobile network, creating a unified connectivity model that aims to cover “everywhere”.
