Archbishop Elpidophoros of America announced his intention to proceed with the creation of the first Greek university in the United States , through the upgrading of the Hellenic College of the Holy Cross in Boston , presenting a coherent and multi-level strategic vision for the future of the Greek Orthodox Church and the Greek Diaspora.
The announcement was made at the 35th annual Archbishop Iakovos Leadership 100 conference , one of the main financial pillars of the Archdiocese of America, where the Archbishop clearly set out the priorities for the next decade : education, institutional strength, unity and openness to society .
The central axis of the plan is the Greek Orthodox Theological School of Boston , which he described as a top priority of the Archdiocese . As he emphasized, the historic institution, which is approaching 90 years old , has limited reserve capital , which makes a structural upgrade and institutional transformation necessary. In this context, its transformation into a university institution with a Greek identity is presented as a long-term but completely feasible goal , provided there is systematic planning and collective mobilization of the Greek Diaspora.
Referring to Balamand University in Lebanon, the Archbishop emphasized that the success of such ventures requires institutional continuity, financial stability, and a clear educational vision .
At the same time, he presented an ambitious plan to restructure the seat of the Archdiocese , focusing on the relocation of the archdiocesan cathedral to the historic St. Bartholomew’s Church Park Avenue , which has been designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark . As he explained, the space offers the possibility of unifying the administrative and spiritual functions of the Church , enhancing its institutional visibility in the heart of New York .
The adjacent community building could house the offices of the Archdiocese, Leadership 100, the Philoptochos Brotherhood, and the Order of St. Andrew , creating a single administrative and spiritual core . To finance the project, the Archbishop proposed the sale of one of the Archdiocese’s properties in Manhattan , while the current Cathedral of the Holy Trinity could be used to expand the Greek-language school , strengthening the educational mission of the Church.
The Philoptochos Brotherhood’s support for the prospect of unified housing of the institutions was confirmed by First Vice President Anita Kartalopoulou , highlighting the importance of cooperation and institutional cohesion .
The Archbishop also referred to the gradual increase in the arrival of new believers to the Orthodox Church in the United States, with increased participation of families , which – as he noted – creates new pastoral and educational responsibilities . Asked about relations with the Russian Orthodox Church , he acknowledged that the unity of Orthodoxy is being tested , underlining the pivotal role of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in maintaining ecclesiastical cohesion in the United States.
In closing, he clearly opposed phenomena of extremism in the field of Orthodoxy , emphasizing the need to protect the unity, ecclesiastical ethos and spiritual identity of the Church in a period of intense social and ideological challenges.
The overall message of his intervention was clear: the Greek Orthodox Church in the United States is called to invest in knowledge, strengthen its institutions, and remain a spiritual beacon of unity , not only for the Greek Diaspora, but also for the broader American society.
