In a climate of deep spiritual emotion, the official meeting of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew with Archbishop Elpidophoros of America and the graduating students of the Greek Orthodox Theological School of Holy Cross took place.
This special hearing took place on Wednesday, May 20, on the great feast of the Transfiguration of Easter, at the Phanar, highlighting once again the indissoluble bonds that unite the Orthodox Diaspora of the United States with the Mother Church of Constantinople.
The presence of the new theologians in the historical center of Orthodoxy had a strong symbolic and substantive character, as it underlined the importance of continuity, spiritual discipleship and the transmission of sacred traditions to the new generations of clergy and lay leaders who are called to serve the Church in America.
The American mission’s pilgrimage began with participation in the Divine Liturgy, which was celebrated at the historic Patriarchal Church of St. George, officiated by the Ecumenical Patriarch himself. Through this liturgical experience, the students had the opportunity to experience firsthand the spiritual heart of Orthodox worship and to gain a deeper understanding of the Church’s mystagogical power.
As was pointed out during the visit, this experience was an essential lesson in spirituality for the future clergy, as it highlighted the way in which the worship life of Orthodoxy can transform even the smallest and humblest churches into imaginary “great cathedrals”, full of faith, devotion and theological depth.
Afterwards, the premises of the Phanar welcomed the mission in a particularly warm and paternal atmosphere. His Holiness expressed his continued interest in the progress of the Hellenic College and the Boston Theological School, emphasizing the importance of the work being carried out there for the education and spiritual training of young cadres of the Church.
Special mention was also made of the ministry of Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, of whom the Ecumenical Patriarch spoke with warm and laudatory words, extolling his steadfast commitment to the Ecumenical Patriarchate and his continuous support for the Mother Church.
The meeting took on an even more personal character with the greeting delivered in Greek by senior student Konstantinos Kazantzis, while the president of the School’s Student Association, Andres Duran, offered the Ecumenical Patriarch a symbolic gift on behalf of all the students.
The day’s program in Istanbul concluded with the students’ attendance at Vespers celebrated at the Church of Saints Constantine and Helen in historic Pera, presided over by the Primate of Orthodoxy. This was followed by a tour of the Phanar district, offering the young theologians an even more direct contact with the history and spiritual heritage of the City.
This important pilgrimage, however, is not limited to Constantinople. Under the guidance of the Archbishop of America, the senior students of the Holy Cross School of Theology will continue their holy journey to Mount Athos and Thessaloniki.
This expanded path aims to offer young theologians a comprehensive experiential introduction to the spiritual, historical and cultural heritage of Orthodoxy. This is an experience that is expected to be a valuable resource for their subsequent ministry in the American continent and for maintaining the ties of the Greek Diaspora with the Orthodox tradition and the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
