A new political and diplomatic debate seems to be opening up with the recent post by US President Donald Trump , who published via the Truth Social platform a map showing Venezuela painted in the colors of the American flag and the characteristic caption “51st state” .
This move by the US President comes just one day after the categorical statements of the acting president of Venezuela in Caracas, Delcy Rodriguez , who made it clear in all tones that her country would “never consider” the possibility of becoming part of US territory.
The narrative of absolute control of the Latin American state is consistently maintained by the American president, especially after the bloody American military operation that culminated on January 3 , leading to the capture of the country’s former president, Nicolas Maduro .
It is indicative that Donald Trump, who in the past has repeatedly expressed his desire to see Canada incorporated as an additional state of the US, now seems to be openly turning his territorial and geopolitical ambitions towards Venezuela. This is not the first time that he has referred to this scenario, as last March, on the occasion of a baseball game, he had announced his intentions by writing characteristically in Truth Social: “Good things are happening in Venezuela lately (…) 51st state, anyone?” .
For her part, acting president Delcy Rodriguez made sure to immediately close the discussion, emphasizing that the transformation of the country into an American state does not even exist as a thought, meaningfully emphasizing: “we love our independence, our heroes and heroines.”
Despite defending national sovereignty, she was quick to reiterate that the new government in Caracas is steadily promoting a “diplomatic agenda of cooperation” with the United States. This approach confirms the new chapter in the relations between the two countries, after the official restoration of their bilateral relations in March, definitively ending seven years of diplomatic rupture imposed by the Maduro regime.
